Assam: Artist makes Durga idol using Medical Waste highlighting COVID-19 Pandemic


  • An artist from Assam created an idol of Goddess Durga with 30 thousand tablets and syringes
  • Sanjib, who made an idol, had earlier prepared the Goddess’s statue with matchsticks and wire in 2019.
  • The idea of building an idol with drugs and syringes came amid lockdown

An artist from Assam named Sanjib Basak has created an idol of Goddess Durga with medical waste amid lockdown. He has created an idol of Goddess Durga with 30,000 expired tablets and syringes, to prepare the idol, he has taken 60 days.

Sanjib works in a Disaster Management Department in Dhubri. He is an Arts graduate but not a professional artist but gradually from the last eight years, he has tried to follow his hobby by making statues of Goddess with some waste material.

In a conversation with Indian Express, he said, “ Amid lockdown, I saw medical stores throwing away the expired medicines, generally store-keepers gave expired medicines back to the company. But this time as of lockdown, they couldn’t do so.”

“Every year, I try to come up with the new idea to make an idol of Goddess Durga but this year, when I went to procure medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw people standing in long queues to have the desired medication but because of lack of stock, they have to go to from one store to another. So I decided to merge the pandemic with the festival.” Sanjib said.

In 2019, Basak’s name was added in the Assam Book of Records for making an idol of Goddess Durga using waste electrical wires weighing 166 kg. Prior to this, he was also awarded for making a 12-feet idol using a matchstick.

“Amid Pandemic, frontline workers were giving lots of importance  to medication and vaccination, and as I wanted to create a unique Durga idol. That is when I came up with the idea of using expired medicines and syringes,” he said.

Besides Sanjib, many artists from West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha came up with new ideas to make the idol for the festival of Durga Pooja. Artist has created idols based on different themes such as Goddess depicted as a women migrant worker, Goddess Durga slays ‘Coronasura’, Idols with masks, A Durga idol made of medical waste.
