Haryana: Woman held captive by husband in toilet for 1.5 years; rescued

In Haryana, a 35-year-old woman was locked in a stinky and small toilet by her husband for 1.5 years. The district woman protection officer (DWPO) from Rishpur village in Panipat district of Haryana rescued her on Tuesday.

The Haryana government officials who rescued the woman said she had become frail and was lying in a unhygienic condition inside a small toilet.

After getting the information of the woman held captive the DWPO, Rajni Gupta, reached the place along with a police team and rescued her.

Gupta said they found the woman lying in the toilet in a miserable condition. She had been in incarcerated in the washroom for over a year. “She was so weak that she could not even walk; she ate 8 chapattis, when we gave her food,”She said. The woman was taken to civil hospital after being rescued and handed over to her cousin.

The woman is married to Naresh Kumar for past 17 years. She is mother of three kids — A daughter (15) and two sons aged 11 and 13.

Her husband claimed that his wife had mental health issues but the welfare department officer said that the victim was able to identify all family members and replied to all the questions asked by the team.

“Her husband could not produce any document regarding her treatment. Even if someone is mentally ill, no one is allowed to act this way with her/him. We will ensure the strongest action against the accused.” added Rajni Gupta.

Sanoli police station SHO Surender Dahiya said a case was registered against the woman’s husband Naresh Kumar under sections 498 A and 342 of the IPC on the complaint of the DWPO and the accused was arrested.
