The 20-year-old died at Safdarjang Hospital after being gang-raped at Hathras. Her condition began to deteriorate thus she was referred to Delhi. Her dead body was allegedly cremated by the UP Police and district administrations of Hathras around 3 am while the family wasn’t the part about of last rites.
Although, The ambulance had to face a number of hurdles on the way to reach cremation field. Female relatives throwing themselves tried to stop ambulance carrying the body and a mother wept helplessly as cops insist on taking her daughter straight to cremation, without allowing a last look.
The woman’s family members said the police forcibly performed the last rites last night even though they wanted to bring her body home one last time and cremate her in the morning as per customs.
Notably, The woman died at Safdarjung hospital yesterday. She had suffered multiple fractures, paralysis and a gash in her tongue in the horrific assault.
As protesters outside the Delhi hospital chanted “hang the rapists”, the woman’s brothers complained that her body had been whisked away by the UP police without their knowledge.
Her father and brothers sat on protest but they were taken away by the cops in a black Scorpio with UP plates.
The woman’s father pleaded with the police to be allowed to take her home and cremate her in the morning. “We wanted the last rites to be performed according to the Hindu traditions. Despite our protests, the cremation was performed. They took the body forcefully. We couldn’t see our daughter’s face for the last time,” the woman’s father told NDTV.
At 2:30 am, while most of her family was home, the police cremated the body.
However, The Hathras police claimed that the cremation took place with the consent and as per the wish of family. “We have videos of family members present there. I will be happy to share with media. We performed the cremation after the family’s consent. Some members of the family were present at the cremation. The media reports are not true,” District Magistrate Praveen Kumar Laxkar said today.
All four attackers, upper caste men from the woman’s village, are in jail. They will now also be charged with murder.
After the death of the victim, all the political parties fiercely targeted the government. The Bhim Army reached Safdarjung Hospital and started a sit-in demonstration. In many districts of the state, people took out a candle march in support of the victim and pleaded for justice.
