After the 41st meeting of the GST Council on Thursday ,Finance minister Sitaraman addressed to media and asserted to the media that the Centre will pay the States the compensation which strictly arises out of GST implementation. The amount of compensation expected is 3 lakh crore . The Centre has estimated that of this Rs 2.35 lakh crore, Rs 97,000 crore compensation requirement is due to GST . The remaining due to the effect of COVID-19 on the Indian economy. There is a large amount to be paid to the states.
“This year we are facing an extraordinary situation that even below 10 per cent approximate estimation you are facing an ‘Act of God’ which might even result in a contraction of the economy…,” Sitharaman said.
Opposition leaders has given an instant response at the Finance Minister for her statement. A Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi in her tweets interrogated Sitharaman over the financial situation before the COVID-19 outbreak. She termed the deteriorating economic situation as ‘Act of Fraud’.
Congressman Jairam Ramesh also hit out at the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
