Political Crisis within the Party, Sonia Gandhi finally offers to resign as Interim President

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is having a virtual meeting to decide a new chief as Sonia Gandhi offers her resignation after a letter from 23 leaders of the party calling for sweeping changes in the organization.

Sonia Gandhi was ‘extremely upset’ with the widening congress rift especially at the time when she was battling with health issues.

According to Sources, Rahul Gandhi doesn’t want to take over as Party chief and he is still on his decision. Sonia Gandhi asked the committee to decide for a new party chief as she isn’t able to continue as president.

Though CWC requests Rahul Gandhi to lead the party. He refused and asked the committee to appoint a Non-Gandhi President. CWC requests Gandhi to stay on until a new president is elected.

Also formed a parliamentary board for the day-to-day functioning of the party, as per the demands of leaders, who wrote to Gandhi seeking an overhaul of the organization.

“Sonia ji is extremely upset. She felt this letter was very inappropriate. She had been virtually forced by the CWC to become interim president last year. It is most unfortunate that this is happening at a time when she is not keeping well,” said the All India Congress Committee (AICC) functionary.

However, party spokesman Randeep Surjewala clarified that Gandhi had not yet resigned.

In her response to the letter, Sonia Gandhi said that she was not interested in leading the party once again when the CWC on August 10 requested her to assume the reins of the organization again.

“This is not the time for an electoral exercise which is potentially divisive. At this point in time and considering the extraordinary situation in the country, the need of the hour is to close ranks, ”said Senior Congress leader and former law minister Ashwani Kumar.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gahlot supported the Gandhi family. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh opposed the letter and said, “This was not the time to raise such an issue, given the need for a strong Opposition against the BJP-led NDA that was out to destroy the country’s Constitutional ethos and democratic principles.”

“What Congress needs is a leadership that is acceptable not just to a few but to the entire party, through its rank and file, and the nation at large,” he further added.

‘Gandhi loyalist’ want Rahul Gandhi to continue as party chief although he has refused continously. On the other hand Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is also clear she will remain as a general secretary and not take on a bigger role.

“Let it be very clear, we have not made any indecent or personal attacks on Sonia ji or the Gandhi family, all of whom we hold in high esteem. But, the issues we have raised about the need for a hands-on and credible Congress president with a complete overhaul of organizational and leadership teams are very vital issues. These can’t be pushed under the carpet by whipping up emotional fervour,” said a Congress leader, who has signed the August 7 letter.

The whole letter controversy has become massive and was discussed in today’s virtual meeting.
