Media is known as the fourth pillar of democracy and its pathetic to see the very pillar shaking. Journalists in India are facing so many issues while doing their jobs.
On Independence day, several journalists spoke over the increasing attacks on Journalists and expressed their concern on the social media platform Twitter. This initiative was part of a campaign.
Since last year, the number of attacks along with false police action has increased rapidly. This questions the future of journalism in India. Being attacked while doing your job is haunting. Especially those who were covering Delhi Riots have been the victim of attacks widely.
Eight journalists have been recently attacked in separate incidents just because they were doing their jobs. Shahid Tantray, Prabhjit Singh and a woman journalists. All three belonged to Delhi based Caravan Magazine. A mob assaulted them while covering the riots in Northeast Delhi.
It has been noticed that Journalists covering the stories from areas like Chhattisgarh and Jammu Kashmir are frequent victims of attacks. Several Journalists are using social media now to address the concern regarding the pathetic condition of Journalists. Thus #StopMediaLockdown is trending on Twitter.
Whereas, most of the cases were reported in the BJP led states along with some other states
FIR was registered against 15 reporters from the regional press in Maharashtra . They exposed the state government’s mistakes and scarcity to control the spread of COVID 19. Additionally, in two scenarios reporters were sent to jail.
We are in the 21st Century, Journalists have always played a major role in informing people and spreading awareness. Being attacked or arrested just because someone is doing his job is really pathetic.
